THE DEEP WEB - NewsScan Daily
Because search engines skim only the top layers of Web pages, they miss most of what's available on what is called the "deep Web," and there may be as many as 500 billion Web pages hidden from the view of most search engines. Paul Duguid, co-author of "The Social Life of Information," says: "Google searches an index at the first layers of any Web site it goes to, and as you delve beneath the surface, it starts to miss stuff. When you go deeper, the number of pages just becomes absolutely mind-boggling." Librarians are now working with Google and other search engines to solve that problem. Daniel Greenstein of the University of California's California Digital Library, the digital branch of the University of California notes: "If you could use Google to just look across digital libraries, into any digital library collection, now that would be cool. It would help libraries achieve something that we haven't yet been able to achieve by ourselves, which is to place all of our publicly accessible digital library collections in a common pool." Dictionaries!
Bill Bowman of the Asbury Park Press write about Dictionary.com: "I stumbled on this site by accident today and was really impressed. It's called dictionary.com. It features a number of different dictionaries, fully searchable, including English, medical, and computer, and has a thesaurus. It also has this cool dream dictionary, which purports to interpret dream subjects. A nice diversion, if nothing else."
Read Print - Similar to Bartleby .. Better Organized
Jennifer Marcalino writes about trying ReadPrint.com: "It's a massive nonprofit library similar to Bartleby -- except that it has no ads and is MUCH better organized and user friendly. We've been using it extensively in school nowadays -- it's great for doing research since you can search within the books."

Searching Academic Papers
Working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and 16 other universities, Google is developing a feature of its search tool that will allow users to search specially tagged academic content. Using a tool called DSpace that MIT developed, colleges and universities can build so-called "superarchives" of scholarly work,
including metadata tags that allow for online searches of that content. According to MIT's MacKenzie Smith, about 125 institutions have used DSpace, but there has not been a tool to search across all of these archives. The Google tool will use an interface created by the Online Computer Library Center and will likely be part of the search site's
advanced-search page. Smith said she hopes all institutions that use DSpace will eventually be included in the search tool. She also noted that the search capability is not restricted to Google. Other search engines may create search tools specifically for the academic content, said Smith, or "[w]e may even do our own thing." Chronicle of Higher Education, 9 April 2004 (From Edupage)
