{"id":424,"date":"2010-09-15T16:46:22","date_gmt":"2010-09-15T21:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.informationconnections.com\/wordpress\/?p=424"},"modified":"2018-09-15T18:17:20","modified_gmt":"2018-09-15T23:17:20","slug":"show-tell-collaborate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.informationconnections.com\/wordpress\/?p=424","title":{"rendered":"Show, Tell, Collaborate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a 2009 report entitled, <em>Confronting the Challenges of Participatory Culture: Media Education for the 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century<\/em>, Henry Jenkins and his colleagues argued that there was a growing gap between youth who were engaged in use of digital media to collaborate and share and those who were not.<\/p>\n<p>The authors were concerned that unequal distribution of resources and knowledgeable mentors would produce a participation gap \u2013 youth who were left out of show, tell, and collaborate opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>They identified requirements to support participation, \u201crelatively low barriers to artistic expression and civic engagement, strong support for creating and sharing one\u2019s creations, and some type of informal mentorship whereby what is known by the most experienced is passed along to novices\u201d (Jenkins et al., 2009, p.3).<\/p>\n<p>As educators, we are positioned to create participatory opportunities which \u00a0support conversation, sharing, playing, and creating in both virtual and physical spaces. \u00a0Using today\u2019s inexpensive and accessible information and communication technologies, we can engage with authentic audiences, elicit and provide feedback, and experience collaborative learning in virtual sharing spaces. In our\u00a0 classrooms, libraries, after-school programs, summer programs, and enrichment programs we can provide face-to-face sharing spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Educators are also charged with keeping students safe and adhering to guidelines and policies that ensure well-being and security. However, even in the most controlled \u00a0environments, there are options to provide a wider audience for student work while protecting student identity.
